Nefer Targets Nigeria Canada School Fee Payment Gap

For Nigerian families sending children to study in Canada, paying tuition can become almost as challenging as securing admission, with exchange rate movements, documentation and cross border payment processes adding pressure to an already expensive process.

Canadian cross border payment platform Nefer is looking to simplify that process by allowing eligible Nigerians to convert naira to Canadian dollars and make supported school fee payments through its platform.

The company’s offering comes at a time when international education payments remain a major financial commitment for Nigerian households. For families paying large tuition bills, even relatively small movements in the naira to Canadian dollar exchange rate can significantly change the amount required in naira.

Making the payment process simpler

Through the Nefer app, users can fund their naira wallet, view the applicable exchange rate and submit their school invoice alongside the required beneficiary information and supporting documents.

The platform then reviews the information before processing the payment.

By bringing currency conversion, documentation and payment into a single platform, Nefer is positioning its service around one of the practical challenges faced by Nigerians making large payments abroad.

The approach also gives users visibility into the naira amount required and the Canadian dollar amount to be sent before confirming a transaction.

Beyond school fees

School fee payments are part of Nefer’s broader Nigeria Canada payments offering.

The platform allows eligible users to hold naira and Canadian dollar wallets, exchange between the two currencies and make supported payments for purposes including vehicle purchases, car auctions, shipments and other personal or business transactions.

This puts Nefer in a growing category of fintech companies focused on simplifying specific cross border payment corridors rather than operating solely as traditional remittance platforms.

A growing cross border market

For Nigeria, Canada has become an important destination for students and families managing international education expenses. That creates a recurring need for reliable payment infrastructure capable of moving larger amounts across borders while giving customers greater visibility into costs and documentation.

Nefer says it has processed more than C$100 million in transactions, as it continues to build financial tools for individuals and businesses with payment needs between Nigeria and Canada.

The company says Nefer Remittance Limited is registered with the Bank of Canada as a Payment Service Provider and with FINTRAC as a Money Services Business.

With international education, trade and migration continuing to create payment demand between both countries, the opportunity for fintechs may increasingly lie in making specific cross border transactions easier, more transparent and better suited to the needs of users.

For Nefer, school fee payments provide one entry point into that wider market.
