African startups building new technology products can now apply for the Next Wave Fund, a programme backed by Google and Kickstarter that offers funding, training and support to early stage technology ventures.
The programme is targeting startups and small businesses developing products across hardware, software, gaming and connected technology, giving selected companies access to resources designed to help them take their ideas to market.
At the centre of the programme is a US$10,000 pledge towards each selected venture’s crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter.
Beyond the funding, the Next Wave Fund is designed to provide founders with practical support as they prepare to raise money and grow their businesses.
What Selected Startups Get
Selected ventures will work with Kickstarter’s Design & Technology team to prepare for a crowdfunding campaign, including hands on guidance aimed at helping founders develop and launch their campaigns successfully.
The programme also provides participants with free access to training created and delivered by Google experts.
Startups will further receive marketing exposure through the programme, giving participating businesses an opportunity to reach new audiences as they build their products and campaigns.
Participants will also gain access to Kickstarter’s community forum for entrepreneurs working across the design and technology sectors.
As their businesses develop, participants will have the opportunity to apply to Google accelerator programmes for additional support during the growth and scaling stages.
Opportunity for African Founders
The fund provides an avenue for early stage African startups working on technology products to access both capital and technical support without relying solely on traditional fundraising channels.
The combination of a crowdfunding pledge, specialist guidance and Google training also means selected founders can work on both their fundraising strategy and product development as they prepare to scale.
Applications for the Next Wave Fund are open until September 30, 2026.
