Chipper Cash Goes Live With Bank Backed Virtual Accounts in Ghana

Chipper cash

Chipper Cash has begun opening virtual accounts for eligible customers in Ghana after integrating its platform with Universal Merchant Bank’s (UMB) virtual accounts infrastructure, adding bank backed account capabilities to its digital financial services offering.

The integration connects Chipper Cash’s technology platform to UMB’s banking infrastructure, allowing the fintech to open and manage virtual accounts for customers through an API connection.

The development is significant because it moves the collaboration beyond technology integration into live financial services, with Chipper Cash now using UMB’s infrastructure to serve eligible customers.

Chipper Cash taps regulated banking infrastructure

The virtual accounts service is built on UMB’s approval from the Bank of Ghana and the Securities and Exchange Commission to offer virtual accounts to eligible businesses operating within the emerging virtual asset ecosystem.

For Chipper Cash, the arrangement provides access to regulated banking infrastructure while allowing the fintech to deliver the customer facing experience through its existing digital platform.

The model reflects a growing approach in financial services where fintech companies build the technology and user experience while regulated financial institutions provide underlying banking infrastructure.

Chipper Cash already offers services including international transfers, payment cards and investment related products. The addition of virtual accounts expands the infrastructure available through its platform in Ghana.

From API integration to customer access

The integration between both companies uses application programming interfaces to connect Chipper Cash’s platform with UMB’s virtual accounts system.

Through the connection, eligible customers can have virtual accounts opened and managed through Chipper Cash.

The move is particularly relevant as financial technology companies look for ways to introduce new digital financial products while operating within regulated financial systems.

Rather than building an independent banking infrastructure for the service, Chipper Cash is connecting into an existing bank backed system and using that infrastructure to extend its digital offering.

Partnership model gains ground

The Chipper Cash and UMB collaboration also highlights the increasing role of partnerships between banks and fintech companies in Ghana’s digital financial ecosystem.

Banks bring regulated infrastructure and access to established financial systems, while fintechs can provide digital interfaces and technology designed around customer use cases.

For Chipper Cash, the integration provides a foundation for further development of its financial services in Ghana.

Dion Jon Taylor Samson, CEO of Chipper Cash, said the company views the integration as part of its broader effort to make financial services more accessible and connected.

“Our successful integration with Universal Merchant Bank’s virtual accounts infrastructure is an important milestone in our journey to make financial services more accessible, convenient and connected.”

The company said it plans to build on the integration as it continues expanding its digital financial services across Africa.
